Harry Potter Book Corners

Thinking about reading the Harry Potter books again?  Need a few pals to help you out?  Then, make some Harry Potter book corners!

You will need some heroes...
...and some villains...
...to get through all 4195 glorious pages.

Never heard of a book corner?  They hold your place in a book, like a bookmark, but they slide onto the corner of the pages instead of sliding into the middle of a book.  This alternative design allows for numerous hilarious and surprising possibilities.  For example, take a look at Nagini biting some pages.
Furthermore, when the human characters are marking a page, they appear to be a book corner in a solid color.  When you pull the black book corner out, you are surprised to find it's actually Harry!

Supplies

  • Colored Construction Paper
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Glue
  • Scissors

Directions

1.  Measure and cut out 6-inch squares for the base of the book corner.
To make the same characters I did, you will need a 6 inch square in white (Voldemort), black (Harry), green (Nagini), brown (Hermione), yellow (Draco), purple (Dumbledore), and orange (Ron).  The colors of the paper are essentially the character's hair or hat color.
2. Fold the book corners.
a) Start with your 6-inch square.
b) Rotate the square 45deg so that it looks a diamond, and fold in half.  You should now have a triangle.
c) Pick up the right corner and bring it to the top corner.  Crease.  Pick up the left corner and bring it to the top corner.  Crease.
d) Open the previous two folds to return, in order to the triangle shape from step b.  Move the top layer of the top corner down until it reaches the bottom of the triangle.  Crease.
e) Fold the right side of the triangle up and over the fold that you just created.  Fold the left side of the triangle into the pocket as well.
You should be left with a plain book corner.

3. Make the character's faces
Measure and cut out six peach or white 3-inch squares that will act as the six human characters' faces (Nagini doesn't get a human face or a square).  The square is the same size of the folded book corner, and will slide right into the opening of the book corner.

I couldn't find peach paper, so I used a light cream color that looks white on camera.  I rationalized my color choice by telling myself that there isn't much of an opportunity to tan in England.

 4.  Make the Hogwarts ties
a) Cut out the material for the Hogwarts ties.  You will need three Gryffindor ties for Harry, Ron, and Hermione, and one Slytherin tie for Draco.  For each tie, you will need an isosceles triangle and elongated pentagon in the primary color, and a bunch of 1/16-inch strips in the secondary color.  Remember, Gryffindor house colors are burgundy and gold, and Slytherin house colors are green and silver.
b) Glue the strips onto the triangle and the pentagon at an angle and about 1/4-inch apart.
c) After the glue has dried, trim the strips to the size of the triangle and pentagon.
d) Glue the triangle on top of the pentagon to form the tie.

5. Cut out additional decorations for each individual character and assemble them.

Below are the items that I used to assemble each character, but feel free to add whatever you like.
  • Harry -  Black book corner, white face, Gryffindor tie, black circular glasses, pink scar, black hair cowlick
  • Ron - Orange book corner, white face, Gryffindor tie, brown freckles
  • Hermione - Brown book corner, white face, Gryffindor tie, additional brown hair
  • Dumbledore - Purple book corner, white face, gold half moon glasses, yellow stars, grey beard
  • Draco - Yellow book corner, white face, Slytherin tie
  • Voldemort - White book corner, white face, red eyes, black pupils, black nostrils, black eyebrows
  • Nagini - Green book corner, red tongue, yellow eyes, black pupils, white fangs, and green eyebrows. (I am aware that snakes do not have eyebrows, but Nagini needed to express her anger somehow.)
You are finally finished! Enjoy your book corners!
