The Secret to Making a Delicious Protein Shake!

When I was in college my future husband and I loved to work out together, and we drank a gazillion protein shakes.  I always thought that they were awful, but they were also necessary for muscle recovery.  Occasionally I would avoid drinking a shake because I disliked them so much, and I would seriously regret it when I started to feel the effects of the workout. Then I tried something that totally changed how I felt about protein shakes.  In fact, it made protein shakes delicious.
My secret? Frozen bananas.

I seriously look forward to drinking my shake after a workout now.  Sometimes I drink one just because I'm craving it!  The frozen bananas conceal the bizarre protein powder flavor and add a creamy texture reminiscent of ice cream to the shake. Who wouldn't like ice cream after a workout?  Here's what I do to make my protein shake.

You will need:

  • 1 scoop of your favorite protein powder (I prefer plant protein for taste)
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 large ripe banana
  • Optional tasty additives (1 tsp cocoa powder, 1 Tbsp peanut butter, etc.)

 Directions

1. Peal and cut very ripe banana into pieces.  Place in freezer bag and then in freezer for at least 4 hours.

More of the sugars have been released in ripe bananas than in under ripe bananas.  That little bit of extra sugar make your shake taste so much better.  Try to find a banana with at least a few brown spots on it.  I usually just freeze the old bananas that we aren't going to eat otherwise!
2.  Add protein powder, milk, banana, and any tasty extras in blender.  I love using my personal blender because is so much easier to clean than a traditional blender!

3.  Blend until combined.

Yummy! You'll never "forget" your protein shake again!  Let me know what you like to add to your protein shakes.  I'm always looking for new ideas.
